Insuring your camera gear | My experience and a recommendation for a camera Insurance

G71_8875Every photographer that has spent money on his gear should insure his stuff. I mean, let´s be honest, most of the equipment is damn expensive and if you let it fall it might just break and leave you behind griefing for several weeks. I´ve been constantly adding to my equipment for more than five years and I´ve spent quite a few euros on that. Others may have a car, I have my cameras and lenses. Believe me, you DO NOT want to wait to insure your equipment AFTER you´ve lost or broken a part of it or whatever happened to it.

INSURE YOUR CAMERA GEAR!

So, take a few minutes/hours and search for an inusrance in your country. For my german readers - I can definetely recommend the Pergande & Pöthe GMBH. No idea if they also exist in other countries, you guys have to find out yourself. I am a customer there as well (don´t worry, I don´t get a single Cent for this, this is just my opinion) and I am really satisfied. The are covering damages etc around the world  and refund an adequate replacement. That means you don´t get something that is worth the actual price lets say of your camera, but something that will replace it well (so maybe a newer camera, that costs the same amount like yours used to be..). Before you really want to become a customer, check their information and you´ll see their conditions. For my german friends, have a look at the photo below:

I´d say it´s quite fair, also regarding the insurance premium - the money you have to pay for your insurance. Y0u can choose between two types, depending on how much money you want to participate with in case something has to be replaced. Option no1 is 2,75 % of the cost at the time bought your equipment, you´ll then only participate with 50 Euros or option no2 are only 2% of the cost, at the time you bought your equipment, then you´ll participate with 250 Euro in case of damage or loss or whatever.

I already had an experience with a damaged product - my GoPro 3. Due to some circumstances it broke in egypt, and after all the "normal" paperwork had been done it was replaced. Without any complication - just the way I would wish for it.

Not every photographer is the same -decide on what fits best for you!

Think about it - how quickly you will spent money let´s say when you go out and drink a couple of beers. It´s all about priorities. It is way smarter to spend that money on an insurance, especially if you´re out a lot photographing the hell out of your camera. I am travelling a lot, so to me it was important that my insurance covers damages etc in foreign countries as well. Look at their conditions and decide on what fits best for your personal situation! We are all different and so are the ways we live and work. Take your time, but don´t forget to do it ;)

Cheers and happy photographing!
